Why did I get this book?

Because I have a terrier. And my terrier is a hunter. She lives for the chase and because I have had lots of success with bird recalls after reading Ulli Reichman’s book, I already knew that being hunting buddies is the way to go. Still, I felt like there was more out there for me to discover, and that’s when I stumbled across Simone’s book and predation substitute training.

What does this book do?

This book helps you understand what predation is and why your dog loves hunting. After explaining this in simple, easy-to-understand terms, it goes on to explain how covering the needs for these behaviors is crucial for your sanity if you live with a hunter. And you guys need to trust me on this: meeting your dog’s needs absolutely will save your sanity.
After covering the basics, the book goes through a few different protocols to help you connect and work with your dog. All the protocols are divided into small sections and each protocol comes with a troubleshooting section too, in case you stumble over some bumps in the road. The book also equips you with substitutional games you can use to entertain your dog at home, or on a slow walk. All in all, it’s a great guide to find some more fun and much less frustration on those walks in the woods, and I assure you that your local wildlife will appreciate it too.

What this book does not do:

As with many of the books I review, this book does not do strict obedience. If you need to teach your dog to sit, you need to toss your money elsewhere. And that’s perfectly fine. But, as I have mentioned with previous reviews, even if you want to do strict obedience, it doesn’t mean you should rule out this book completely because you can’t do strict obedience if your dog gets distracted by a squirrel by the track.
